One of the most profound aspects for me personally in participation over these many years with CLM is the authenticity “putting faith into practice,” the fundamental affirmation of laity as an integral part of church.  Meaningful Catholicism involves connecting prayer and the spiritual reflection to acting in the reality of the world around us in current times, inspired and nurtured by the Eucharist and our communion as Eucharistic family.

Robert and Lori bring not only the powerful witness of their way of living, but also their tremendous knowledge—in the the most humble of listening ways and participation, their leading both in retreats, civic actions, and in a monthly spiritual reflection Cenacle group.  The bringing together of individuals unique and inspiring to me, providing a framework for honest, vulnerable, genuine faith-searching, faith-sharing has been a powerful gift.

A couple of examples:

The issue of deportation and dignity for migrants was addressed head-on in a 2-day witness walk through the Yakima Valley in the summer of 2025, culminating in a rally in downtown Yakima, finishing with a personal visit to the office of Representative Dan Newhouse to present our petition for “Citizenship, not Deportation,” gathering with folks I had not met, though all powerfully connected in the conviction of our message.

Volunteering a short few weeks in El Paso at Annunciation house during COVID, providing welcome and hospitality to “Guests,” ie, asylum seekers, from predominantly Honduras, El Salvador, Guatemala, Cuba, and Venezuela at that time, who were allowed into The States; assisting them in transition to their sponsors families all over the United States while they awaited their future date for their asylum hearings.  Annunciation House provided food, clothing, shelter, assistance with patching transportation together, food for their multi-day bus rides to sponsors, or helping them reach and navigate the El Paso airport.

Grateful for my enriched spiritual journeying time with CLM, the gifts that Robert and Lori share, and the wonderful fellowship of many I’ve come to know.
